South West Cyclo-Cross League FINAL Standings 2011-12

posted 23 Dec 2011 02:53 by South West CycloCross   [ updated 23 Dec 2011 03:09 ]

After a very challenging final round at the Certini Cross, Central Park, the final league standings were decided.  Following the racing action competitors and supporters retreated to the Mayflower Centre for the complimentary buffet provided by the league.

As all enjoyed jacket potatoes and mince pies with cream, League Chairman Graham Edwards gave a compelling review of the not only the current season but the previous ten years of South West cyclo-cross action.  Over the past ten years we have seen the league grow tremendously and not only has it given us a great arena for grass roots racing, but many friendships have been built and we have had some great experiences.

It is always amazing how quickly the season passes after much planning leading up to September.  Congratulations to all of our competitors and many thanks to all our volunteers who make the league such a fantastic success.

Good luck for the New Year and we wish you all a Merry Christmas.

Certini Cross/SW Cyclo-Cross League Round 11 (FINAL)

posted 18 Dec 2011 12:39 by South West CycloCross   [ updated 23 Dec 2011 03:12 ]

Icy conditions greeted the early races of the 4th annual Certini Cyclocross race held at Central Park Plymouth.  The slippery conditions couldn’t stop the Birchill brothers from storming away from the other U12’s competitors, with Harry Birchill (MDCC) just managing to pull away from his U10 brother Freddie Birchill (MDCC) on the last lap.

Next up in the Youth race the full lap circuit strung the riders out with Joel Kelly (MDCC) also taking the win over his younger brother Will Kelly (MDCC).

Tim Fey

The main race of the day proved to be a greater test of skill and bike reliability as the frequent heavy showers added to the already slippery and muddy conditions.  As the race started several riders came off at the first bend which put some of the favourites further back then they would have preferred.  It was senior rider Matt Loake (Southfork Racing) who established himself at the front on lap one, with vet riders Stuart Pickering (Cyclelogic) and Tim Fey (Elite Velo) in hot pursuit.

On the 2nd lap it was Loake and Fey who opened up a gap over the rest of the chasers. The pair swapped the lead throughout the 9 lap event with vet Fey eventually getting the better of Loake to take the win over senior rider Loake.  Hot on their tails were senior riders John Peters (CSSH) and World Record Holder Vin Cox (Cyclocross.com).  The vets top three finished up with Stuart Pickering taking 2nd and Rich Taylor (Exeter Wheelers) taking 3rd.
